Korea's representative military culture festival
The 15th 2025 Gyeryong Military Culture Festival Gyeryong Military Culture Festival
Since 2007, Gyeryong-si, Chungcheongnam-do Province, has been
hosting the Gyeryong Military Culture Festival every fall.
This year, the theme of the festival is
"Gyeryong's Dream, K-Military Culture Taking Flight
to the World!"
and it will be held for five days from September 17 (Wed) to 21
(Sun) at the Gyeryong Air Base runway and surrounding areas.
Background of the Gyeryong Military Culture Festival
Gyeryong City was considered a geomantically auspicious site by King Taejo Lee Seong-gye when he envisioned it as the new capital,
and it is home to historically significant sites such as the foundation stones of the royal palace, Sutyongchu, Amyongchu, and Goemokjeong.
Additionally, it is adjacent to the famous Mount
Gyeryongsan and the Baekje cultural hubs of Gongju and
Buyeo,
and boasts the geographical advantage of being
accessible within two hours from anywhere in the
country.
In 1989, the Army Headquarters, a central institution of South
Korea's national defense, moved from Seoul's Yongsan District to
Gyeryong-si,
followed by the Navy and Air Force, which completed their
relocations by 1993, establishing Gyeryong-si as the heart of
national defense.
Furthermore, military personnel and their families from the
Army, Navy, and Air Force also relocated to Gyeryong-si,
resulting in half of the city's population being composed of
military personnel and their families.
Various other defense-related facilities were also relocated to
the area.
The annual "Gyeryong Military Culture Festival" features participation from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, showcasing innovative and diverse programs, solidifying Gyeryong-si as the hub of military culture and the capital of national defense.
Building on this foundation, the "2022 Gyeryong World Military Culture Expo" was successfully held as a global platform for peace and harmony.
This event showcased the resilience of South Korea, which overcame the hardships of the Korean War to achieve remarkable economic development, and brought together the aspirations of the Korean people for the end of war and the hopes of humanity for world peace, creating a venue for harmony and peace.
In a world where the value and significance of the military are uniquely profound and invaluable, an event that seeks global peace and security through the military is a highly meaningful cultural event.
In response, Gyeryong-si is preparing the "2025 Gyeryong Military Culture Festival," a comprehensive event featuring military band performances, weapon exhibitions and rides, and military camp experiences, all held in Gyeryong—the heart of military culture—to reflect the city's local conditions, cultural foundation, and the aspirations of people worldwide.
The city is preparing a special event to invite foreign veterans and their descendants to promote the festival globally and express gratitude to veterans from friendly nations such as the Philippines and Thailand who participated in the Korean War,
